Tanya's Yoga Story

Tanya couldn’t touch her toes, let alone do a handstand or split. She was dragged to her first yoga class over 20 years ago by a friend and almost walked out. Everyone in class made it all look so easy, but it all seemed completely impossible. They were all Zen yogis and she found herself counting the minutes until it was over. After class though something profound happened: there was a sense of calmness, a feeling of clear-headedness. She felt like it was the first time she had taken a deep breath in years. Tanya was, begrudgingly, hooked.

Over time and with a lot of practice (and patience) she started to connect more to her body in space and strength and flexibility grew. Tanya was falling in love with yoga, one breath at a time, and began to see the positive affects it was beginning to have on her daily life. She was able to laugh things off in a way that she could never have before. She was learning to breath before she reacted. She was practicing yoga on and off the mat and realized that yoga was helping her to become a better person.

Tanya knew relatively early on in her yoga practice that one day she would like to teach but didn’t take the YTT plunge until about 13 years of practice. She went to India and lived in an ashram where she learned how to meditate and to take in yogic philosophy and history for the first time. She went to Hawaii and studied her first 200-hour vinyasa teacher training with Karin Khun who taught Tanya discipline and acceptance. She studied with Jayme Hernandez and learned the beautiful art of teaching pre and postnatal yoga. She went to Nicaragua and studied Aerial Yoga with Saffron and Amy from Circasana and took the practice into the air, laughing the entire time.

Tanya’s first yoga studio opened in May of 2015 in Old Montreal and she knew that this was what she was meant to do. Teaching yoga and mediation brought a sense of happiness into her life that she had never felt before. She learned that she loved to teach and that she was surprisingly good at sharing her practice. For the next five years she hosted live classes, workshops, yoga private parties, yoga and wine tasting weekends at vineyards and even hosted a goat-yoga fundraiser for a local farm raising over 20K for charity. It was the wildest ride of her life.

The COVID-19 crises led Tanya to closing her studio doors in 2020, but with the challenges of the pandemic, she was able to seek out new opportunities for growth and adaptability. It was truly time to practice the Art of Letting Go and turn the page on her yoga journey. This has led her to where she is today: Teaching yoga online and leading yoga teacher trainings of her own.

Tanya does this because she loves it and hopes that her joy for the practice helps inspire her students to find strength and flexibility, in body, mind and spirit. And she can’t wait to see where the next steps of this journey will take her.
